Yale Swing, Blues, and Fusion is the non-competitive swing and blues dancing community on campus. We provide a space for people to get together and dance in a fun, informal setting.
Our regular events include monthly swing dances, weekly swing, blues, and fusion practica on Sundays, weekly fusion practica on Tuesdays, and trips to local dancing events. We offer Lindy Hop and Blues lessons every semester, for a nominal fee, and invite guest instructors for dance workshops at various points throughout the year.
Our events are open to everyone – undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, and members of the broader New Haven community.
The highlight of our week and of yours. Join us for DJed social dancing with wonderful company in a relaxing atmosphere! No experience, no partner necessary—a smile will suffice. Swing from 7:30 to 9, and then blues/fusion from 9 to 10:30.

Classes are designed for dancers who are comfortable with 6-count swing and the 8-count swing out. If you've taken a YSBF beginner swing series, you'll be ready to go.
1:00-1:50: Swing Out Clinic
Everybody's favorite move receives a lot of attention, but there's no such thing as too much attention when it comes to the swing out. We'll refine the feel of the swing out, and seek that effortless flying feeling.
2:00-2:50: Macro Musicality
Measures, Eights, Phrases, Choruses, Forms: all of these things are part of the music and knowing how they work can help us predict what's going to happen next even in songs we've never heard before.
3:00-3:50: Connection Playground
Lindy hop is a dance of two positions, right? Open and closed? Wrong! Connection playground is all about finding different shapes with a partner, and connecting in new and creative ways while still maintaining a lindy hop feel.
4:00-4:50: How to make stuff up!
Improv is a central feature of lindy hop. In this class, you'll learn how to link and layer moves in creative new ways, working in groups to find cool new ways to lindy hop. We'll incorporate solo jazz movement to increase your flexibility.
Bring comfy clothes, smooth-soled shoes, and a water bottle!
Joey Science started swing dancing in 2005, and still can't wrap their head around where the time has gone. Since 2005, Joey has fallen madly in love with both lindy hop and blues dancing, and recently launched headfirst into learning Saint Louis Shag. Joey is actively training in both lead and follow roles, and finds that each role is important and exciting in its own way. Joey is an outspoken feminist, and ridiculously loud about it.
